1) RAJA MUDA SELANGOR INTERNATIONAL REGATTA
Malaysia's Royal Selangor Yacht Club announced recently at a media conference in Port Klang that the Selangor State Government is committing for the next 5 years to be this Regatta's main sponsor and that henceforth the Regatta would be known as the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta.

This name alteration acknowledges the role patron H.R.H. The Sultan of Selangor has played in founding and supporting this Regatta when he was the Raja Muda (aka Crown Prince) of Selangor and the wish of Selangor State, Malaysia's first state to achieve developed state status, to use its association with this world-renowned Regatta to promote itself in future as a significant sailing and business destination.

This IRC Regatta, now in its 16th year, is probably South East Asia's most tactically challenging. It comprises 3 overnight 60-90 nautical mile Category 3 passage races in the Straits of Malacca starting in Port Klang with overnight stopovers en route on the beautiful islands of Pangkor and Penang before finishing in Langkawi. The remaining 4 races comprise 2 windward leeward races in Penang and Langkawi.

Entries are expected to reach almost 40 yachts spread across all classes. In the Racing Class the boats compete for the specially commissioned Raja Muda Cup made by Royal jeweler, Garrards. Confirmed entries to date include Neil Pryde's Hi-Fi, Burns/Kinmonth's Mandrake, Frank Pong's Boracay, Robert Knight's Malaysian built DK46 Drumstick, Bill Bremner's Foxy Lady, Jonathan Mahony's Happy Endings, Jeremy Muller's Scallywag, and the Royal Malaysian Navy's new DK built Bahtera Perdana. In the Premier Cruising class confirmed entries include 2004 Jugra Cup winner Peter Cremers' Shahtoosh, Dr Ian Nicolson's new Intrigue, Ed Van Den Heuvel's Swan Bolero and Geoff Hill's Strewth, premier cruising class winner of the 2005 Hainan Race.

2) The fleet is building rapidly into one of the most competitive fleet compared to recent years.  Past winners of the Raja Muda Cup Neil Pryde (twice) and Warwick Downes will be there, and Frank Pong's Reichel/Pugh 76 Boracay should give them a run for their money.  The Swan Bolero will join the Premier Cruising Class to take on the 2004 winner of the Jugra Cup Shahtoosh, who was soundly beaten in the recent Hong Kong-Hainan race by Australian Strewth, which is also joining in. Club Cruising Class includes not less than 9 entries from the Royal Selangor Yacht Club - this itself is probably a record - and it reflects the strong sailing and racing ethic of the Members of the host Club.  They will battle with yachts from Singapore and Phuket, and the added quest for the Kra Challenge Cup within this class should ensure plenty of keen rivalry. Eveline and Sirius 1935 from the Classic division are currently being spruced up at RSYC and we are expecting several other boats that are currently lurking in Singapore and Port Dickson, to join them.  We are loking forward to seeing these and more - probably a total of 35-40 boats - on the starting line on 19th November.

3) Additional generous sponsorship from Gapurna SDN BHD has enabled us to enter 2 youth crews from Selangor in the Club Cruising class of the regatta. They will be sailing in RSYC yachts MAS AYU II and VELA, chartered from Club Members, and will play a full part in the event. The Honourable Minister for Youth & Sports has been invited to attend the welcome dinner at RSYC on 18th November, where she will be introduced to the young sailors. We wish them an exciting and enjoyable regatta.

4) We are grateful to Penang Port SDN BHD for granting the participants free berthing and permitting use of the Tanjong City Marina during the stop-over in Penang.  Penang Port is also sponsoring the refreshments during the Trishaw Races, which will be staged at the Marina from 1700 on Tuesday, 22nd November.

5) We are happy to announce the signing-up of Penang-based Limbongan Batu Muang as sponsor for a new trophy to be presented to the winner of the Premier Cruising Class for the race from Pangkor to Penang. Managing Director, Oh Kean Shen is a long-time Club Member and supporter of leisure boating in Malaysia, and we are delighted to have his company onboard.

6) THERE'S A NEW CUP IN THE CLUB!
The exciting new Kra Challenge Cup is introduced to promote inter club racing in the Kra peninsula and the idea caught an overwhelming interest from various eligible clubs. RMIR itself has committed to donate RM2500 towards any youth sailing organisation in the Kra Peninsula nominated by the winning club. This new cup will be able to introduce a new form of friendly racing competition amongst our neighboring club that was meant for amateur sailors only and to focus on the need to build up the Asian youths’ interest to sail more.

7) GO PREMIER AND WIN A PEWTER!
RMN is planning to enter its new yacht in the Premier Cruising Class in which the class will compete for the prestigious Jugra cup donated in 2004 by HRH Sultan of Selangor, the RMSIR's patron and one of RMSIR's founders. Each winner gets to bring home a superb hand cast Royal Selangor pewter, replica of the original 2.8kg Sterling Silver.

8) A GREAT NEW ADDITION!
The two days of RMSIR Harbour Race will be held in Penang and Langkawi consecutively this year, unlike the recent years where the two days are held in Langkawi alone. The change for the venue is due to the opening of Penang’s stunning new inner city marina with more convenient and safer facilities right in the heart of downtown Penang. For RMSIR yachtsmen, it will be more time to enjoy Penang’s unique mixture of cultures, food and fun. RMSIR will be the first big event to be using the Marina and there are possibilities that the official opening of the Marina may be timed to coincide with RMSIR's stopover. Indeed, this year Penang promises to be a great new addition to RMSIR.

9) GREAT RACE OFFSHORE AND ONSHORE!
There will be a separate race in Penang which is very important to all serious yachtsmen. On the day itself, there will be an onshore Trishaw race. It will be fun event with great prizes awarded for different categories of participants from speed racers to the best dressed, vintage to the amber nectar cruisers. All participants are assured that there will be a team of officiating international judges for this event who will ensure the harbour race is conducted in accordance with all applicable rules for onshore trishaw racing as well.
